'Having a dog who is clinically obese is a welfare issue' Suffolk vet warns

More than half of the UK's dogs are overweight, which can shorten a pet's life by up to two years, experts have warned. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association describes canine obesity as a "chronic, progressive, and preventable disease." Angela Day, a canine rehabilitation specialist from Bury St Edmunds, said: "Having a dog who is clinically obese is a welfare issue. "Many owners don't realise their dog is overweight until it's already causing harm." Some breeds, such as Labradors, are at higher risk due to genetic factors that make weight control more challenging. Ms Day advised using a body condition score chart to check a dog's shape by feel and sight. Owners should be able to feel their pet's ribs without pressing hard, and see a visible waist from above. She also recommended weighing food portions accurately, cutting out unhealthy treats, and building exercise into a dog's daily routine. Ms Day added: "It's not about depriving your dog. "It's about giving them the best chance of living a long, pain-free, active life."

Coffee morning helps raise awareness of issues facing older people

A coffee morning in Bury St Edmunds has helped raise awareness of the challenges facing older people. The "Raise a Cup" event was hosted at Liberty Lodge, a Churchill Living development, with charity Hourglass in attendance to discuss safer ageing. Penny Wilby, community fundraising manager at Hourglass, joined apartment owners in the lounge on Thursday, July 31, to discuss the charity's work. A new partnership between Churchill and Hourglass will see £400,000 donated over the coming years to support services such as a 24/7 helpline and a national network of frontline teams. The event took place on July 31 (Image: Supplied) Ms Wilby said: "I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the staff and owners at Liberty Lodge and talking to them about how Hourglass is fighting to combat the abuse and exploitation of older people. "It's a fight we can't win on our own, so we need companies and individuals to help us wherever they can." Lodge manager Silke David added: "This event was a perfect opportunity to celebrate this, and to talk about the importance of connection and safety for the over-60s."

Hopes new Ed Sheeran music video can bring tourists to Suffolk town

There are hopes that Ed Sheeran's new music video will provide a boost to Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk. Various locations around the west Suffolk town feature in the singer's video for his song 'A Little More', which was released on Thursday. Hengrave Hall is one of the sites which plays a prominent part, as well as All Saints Hotel in Fornham St Genevieve, Fitta Bodies Gym, the British Sugar factory and St Mary's Church. David Harris is hoping the music video can bring a boost to the area (Image: Newsquest) David Harris, of Hengrave Hall, praised Sheeran for how he helps to promote Suffolk to his millions of followers. "The platform that it gives to Bury is huge, and I think Ed Sheeran does a lot to promote Suffolk as a county," said Mr Harris. "We are very lucky to have a world superstar to have in Suffolk that does put so much back into the county. How many visitors will come to Bury that would not before?" Mr Harris believes it will make a "huge difference" for the amount of people that visit Suffolk. He praised his team for how they dealt with the filming, which took around one week, stating they "pull together to deliver the very best". Harry Potter star Rupert Grint plays a prominent role in the video, which racked up more than one million views in 24 hours. Screen Suffolk helped facilitate the filming around the town. A spokesperson for the company said: "As the official film office for the county, Screen Suffolk were delighted to facilitate filming across West Suffolk and in Ipswich. "It's so great to see Bury St Edmunds featured so recognisably in this brilliant video." Both Sheeran and Mr Grint were spotted at alongside each other earlier this year, as Ipswich Town lost 1-0 to Tottenham.
